My Naked Necks (Turkens) seem to have developed a large mass on the upper right side of their neck/shoulder area. I can see seeds through their skin and I'm not sure what this is really. I'm thinking its a gizzard issue. We have them outside and thought there were enough small rocks to act as grit so we have not given them any grit. We have them on scratch feed right now and they told us we did not neet grit with it. This mass has been there since we got them from the store and it didn't seem to bother them so we left them alone but today when we went out to feed them the second time of the day the mass grew to about the size of a golf ball!!!! Can anyone plz help us out?? Do we just go and get grit and hope for the best or do we try to make them spit it out?? Any advice is welcome!!! Thanks in advance!!!

Ok so I did do some reaserch on the net and found a page on impacted crop. I didn't want to think this could be a case of impacted crop b/c I didn't want to "preform surgery" on my chickens. But the site did say that if all the other chickens have the same sized mass then it's probably ok esp if they are free rance wich they are. I'll keep an eye on it since they are not acting any different from the Leg Horns or my Road Island Reds. I'd like to think that I cant see the mass on the other chickens b/c they are not naked necks but I will go and have a feel on them as well. Any advice is still welcome!!!!

How old are your birds?
Does the "mass" go down overnight?
If your birds are eating food for which they need "teeth" they need grit, or enough gravel etc. in their natural environment.
What you are seeing is a full crop. If the size reduces overnight, then it is most likely not impacted.

here is a picture of a chickens anatomy, you can see where the crop is. I don't give my chickens grit in the summer when they are out free ranging, the only time they get grit is in the winter when the ground is frozen and covered in snow. and scratch is not a wholesome diet for chickens they need an all round chicken feed like Purina Flock Raiser or simular that has all the nutrients to keep them healthy. Scratch is like dessert.

So the hubby checked our Naked Necks today in the morrning and he said the buldge deff went down. We did go to C-A-L- Ranch today and picked up a bag of all flock all purpose feed since we also have a few duckies that need feeding. This stuff deff crumbles easier and hopefully the buldge will go down some more since it really freaked me out when I saw how big it was. My babies are getting so big and cant waite untill I can go out and find the first eggs!!! Thanks again everyone for your help!!!!!
