Hi Chicken Lovers! I am brand new to the chicken world and our girls just started laying eggs. We just found today a blue, green, and brown eggs. I keep thinking I have our breed types down but now with egg colors I am even more confused. Can anyone help? I think I have Starlight Green Egger, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red and potentially Americana. Basing this off the bins we got them from Rural King, but I know they can get mixed up. I only know for a fact our white chicken is producing brown eggs. We have four girls in total. Thank you so much! SO excited to be a part of this community.

First two pictures: Easter Egger pullet. Possibly the blue or green egg layer. Brown is possibly, but less likely. I am betting she layed blue or green.
Third and forth pictures: Buff Orpington pullet. Lays brown.
Fifth picture: Rhode Island Red pullet. Lays brown.
White hen: Mutt. Possibly the green or blue egg layer. I would have thought Amberlink, but you have two blue/green layers, so it has to be her.

The only one that does not look like she is laying is the Buff Orp. All are pullets.

I believe your guesses are pretty accurate and the white one is a White Rock I believe. Regardless, they are all beautiful and healthy and you should be commended as a newcomer to raising them.

Thank you so much Cherrynberry! Sorry for any dumb questions. Can a chicken lay a brown and colored ( blue or green) egg as well or can they only lay one color type of egg? Also how can you tell the Buff Orp is not laying yet? She is so scared and doesn't let me get near her, so photos are harder to get with her. Thank you so much for sharing! Love learning about this.

Thank you so much! 🥰 I love having them and they are bringing me so much joy to our family.

No they cannot. If one lays brown, they lay brown forever. Hard to explain, but sometimes they may lay white, but it is not something that happens often. A brown egg is a brown coating over a white base. So if a hen is old and looses pigment/"ink" they can sometimes lay paler brown or white, but never blue. A brown layer will never lay blue or green.

The Buff Orpington has a pale colored comb. I doubt she will start laying before daylight savings ends.

Also, no need to be sorry. I am glad to help :)
