Hey everyone , i would just like to do a little thread about a certain hybrid! there are some photos below , and this hybrid has many names , that i have seen all over BYC! its called Rhose Island Red Hybrid in ireland , some call them little reds m some call them red sexlinks , ive heard of them being called golden sexlinks , and have seen them be called many other things! What do you call them , and where are you? just curious! heres a few photos of mine

Generically, she would be called a red sex link, but different US hatcheries have their own special names for this type of hybrid (like Cinnamon Queen).

I have a gold sex link, which have similar white markings, but her base color is lighter, sort of an golden-orangey brown. The red sex links are are a darker red-brown by comparison.

There are a billion names, it seems..comets, stars, sexlinks. They come in different colors, but personally I don't see a lot of difference between the golds and the reds. The blacks are easy to spot, lol...even for old eyes like mine.

Your girl looks just like my red sexlinks. I love 'em! They are great layers, cold hardy and reasonably friendly. I'm in Colorado and call 'em red sexlinks.

Yes, same chicken here as well, although people make a distinction between the red and gold sex links (and black sex links too). I'll try to post a pic of my girl tomorrow so you can see how my gold girl looks.

I think sometimes different breeds can be used to make red sex links, not always RIR. Most hatchery RIRs in the US are so far from the standard, they are called Production Reds.

Of course, I think for the average backyard chicken keeper, the names they use for their birds are what they were called by whoever was selling them. It wasn't until I looked on BYC that I found my Ameraucana is actually an Easter Egger! Communication is easier if everyone agrees on the labels, but sometimes it gets a bit nitpicky.

exactly , here we call em rir hybrids , in ireland that is! but apparently with all the differant names lies the same chicken! and we call black sexlinks blackrocks! their other name is mrs pepperpot , theres 3 names for them too haha

and mickey 328 , they are amazing alright , great personalities , always flying in the window , and the one laying in the basket (also looking on the oven) is matilda , my profile is named sfter her haha , the first is kim , and the one on the mat having a nice rest is Rosie

Here is a gold sex link for comparison. I looked on the hatchery website, and she is RIR crossed with Rhode Island White. The red sex links tend to be RIR or New Hampshire crossed with Delaware.

I can usually tell the reds from the golds when the feed store gets pullets in. What do you think? This is Freckle.

Freckle's much friendlier since she has started laying, but does not like to be in the sun. Racing for the shade while I try for a pic! She gets overheated very easily, which seems to be a problem for her but not all GSLs. An extremely calm girl and much prettier than I expected. I'll get another someday.

shes lovely , like 1 of ours , but the rir hybrids , are so the same! i mean you can get them that color , nearley all white , deep brown , deep red , mottled white etc..

I like it when the chickens look different, so you can tell them apart! Do you keep your hybrids separately from the scots dumpys, or all in together?
