NASHVILLE, TN / METRO DAVIDSON COUNTY POULTRY ORDINANCES

Quote:
I suggest lots of "eddication." I give away eggs out the yin-yang in cute clear plastic (recycled) 6-packs. People love them, they ask about the different colored eggs, the want stories about the individual chickens . . . and they learn a little about their chicken-keeping neighbors in the process.

Remember, when suburban/urban people pick up a home-grown egg, it may be the first time they have ever actually considered how food gets to their tables. This is a huge leap in thinking, and just takes time and patience.

. . . and since I have little patience, I for one am moving out to the country.

Waaaayyyy out.

Good luck to those of you who stay in/near the city, and keep on [respectfully] chickening!

Well, it seems like it's going back and forth here.

First, the planning commission was all for allowing chickens in Nashville.
Then, the council voted down the bill that would allow (conservatively) a limited number of chickens in city limits.
Now, just last night the council ALSO "deferred indefinitely" the bill that would specifically prohibit the keeping of all poultry and other "farm animals" in Nashville city limits.

So that's good! Now I guess there will be a compromise bill or something introduced. Hopefully it will be a good one. Just wanted to give this update to anyone following...keep on educating and letting your voice be known!

Hey guys,
does anyone know the status as of now?
I have been out of town for almost a month.
Any news?

Does anyone have any news on this?
I want to get some hens but would rather not be an outlaw...

Thanks

I haven't heard anything lately at all. I bet the folks at food security partners would know if there have been any other events transpire. We haven't gotten any slack though for our ten plus chickens in downtown nashville area....just keep your neighbors happy. Gotta go tuck our baby chicks in.

What was the finial rule on chickens? I am going to miss my farm if i have to move. I just don't see the wife driving 1 hour to go to work everyday.

I would like to know an update too ... I was just offered a job in Nashville to start April 2010. If I can't have chicks in the city of Nashville then I need to look for a small farm in another city close by.

In Metro Davidson Country I think you can have 3 hens. I'm in Davidson County but live in Joelton on 7ac. I can have roosters and hens all I want.

Here's a link from Nashville.gov regarding poultry ordinances:

www.nashville.gov/council/docs/analysis/090901.pdf - 2009-08-27

and

www.nashville.gov/mpc/pdfs/meetings/2009/090827m.pdf (see Item 7)

It seems to me that the proposed substitutes were accepted; at least that's the way I read it. I assume that these links are the most current on the website.

So if anyone says you can't have chickens, you can tell them to look up ordinance No. BL2009-510 (Holleman & LaLonde). And then refer them to Resolution No. RS2009-113 and RS2009-114

That'll at least keep them busy for awhile.

It looks like chickens win. Roosters on the other hand . . .
