Nasty Cochins.. Is this typical for this breed ??

They even attack older birds too. Leghorns, Augsburgers, Silkies, Ameraucanas, Barnyard mixes, all of them. They were the only ones who did so when they were younger with a group of four the same age with 15 a few weeks younger and four older at the time. As the younger ones past them in size, they have continued to bully every single hen that I have.

Women I work with keep chickens and none of them will keep this breed now since they have all had issues with them being nasty. Wish I'd known before I got them.

Sounds like it's time for chicken soup.

Yep. I've been looking for someone to help me learn how to process. Youtube only helps so much. I will not carry my computer outside to try to follow along while blood is splattering. Not to mention, there are just somethings I have to do myself to learn. I just don't want to taint the meat.

I also have a rooster I intend to process soon. He crows at three in the morning.

I had a similar experience with cochin babies but now that they are grown they are actually timid. I brought 2 of them home around 3 weeks and kept them in a plastic dog crate in my kitchen. Large enough for a shep so not small by any means and as they grew every time I went in to change food and water they would come at me- since they were little it wasn't an issue but I fully expected to possibly need to do them in as I had already dealt with an evil roo that came free with my girls when I got them. However, once the cochins were old enough to move outside- they had a total change of heart. Now they are actually the bottom of the barrel in the flock. They are the only roos and are about 5 months old and run from me, and all of the hens-especially the cochin hen (she is/was bottom of the pecking order so I suspect part of her continued harassment is due to them coming in young). I spent weeks trying to change Evil Buds mind about his feelings for me- and in the end he was dog food. I currently have 2 barred rock roos housed in a dog kennel (temporary till they find a new home of become food) and they too have challenged me occasionally but so far only when I am late to feed. I cant tell you what peace it brings to walk into my main run and not give any thought to what those cochin boys are doing. Now if they would just start being interested in the ladies...maybe too timid wont work in the end :(

Wow... I have two Black Cochins and they are awesome.. Not timid, not mean. I got them hoping one will go broody and help me raise some Turkeys.. I love my cochins
