I lost 9 Rhode island reds and my Rooster yesterday, I believe 2 a coon . Only one survivor.. my only brown leghorn and she was terrified.
Im MAD and SAD.
Sorry to hear of your loss. What wounds were found on the birds? What makes you think coons? 9 or 10 birds this time of year is not the normal with coons. Springtime with a pack of young ones when teaching them to hunt maybe, but generally not this time of year.
Other killers of a lot of birds would be a dog or pack of dogs, or perhaps a weasel or one of the cousins. All depends on the wounds you found as to which.
sorry about your loss. Raccoons are probably my least fave of all chicken predators. Can you tell us what you found, what the condition of the dead birds was, maybe someone can figure out what the predator was, and confirm it was a raccoon.
Raccoons are unlikely to be able to kill birds during the daytime, especially free ranging birds. I'd think fox or dog much more likely. Not that raccoons are our friends!!!
Lock your poor survivor in her safe coop, because your predator will be back very soon!

The only survivor was a brown leghorn. These are supposedly wild, unfriendly, and flighty birds, but if you are free ranging they are more likely to survive a predator attack without serious injury than the big, fat, slow, dumb, fluffy butted strains are. Like everything in life you's pays your money and you's takes your chances. So why not get the best odds you can by only running survivor hens?
