Nasty Rats Stink!

Hello friends. I had a rat problem in my chicken run.
Snap traps and my dog took care of many, or so I thought!!!
My daughter and I found a very large hole in the ground where they were going in and out.
Well, here is the stupid idea that we both came up with.
Please don't judge us, it IS okay to laugh though.
We put the water hose down the hole, it went 8 feet down!
Then we turned the water on, it ran for 45 minutes before bubbling up.
My daughter was checking it when a wet rat jumped from the hole... I think the entire neighborhood heard the screams. LOL
NOW! I have DEAD RAT SMELL coming from the ground in the run!! It is so gross.
Does anyone know how to get rid of it?
I guess this is rat revenge.

Apple cider vinegar or essential oils might help get rid of the smell. You could get some barn cats to hunt the rats.

I'm not sure how to get rid if the smell. Sorry.

I got a Ratproof Feeder and really like it. No more rodent food buffet at my house.

I like your ideas. I would be so afraid to get a cat though. We have coyotes around.

Strong concentrate lysol in the little very dark brown bottle works well and you can smell it at other holes you may not see. My dear, the same holes the rats use are most likely being used by snakes

I haven't seen any snakes, I would not want to hurt one.

It might be best to let time take care of the issue rather than risk complicating problems.

You could shovel dirt into every hole you can find to better bury the dead.

I agree, fill in those holes with dirt, and cover them with concrete pavers or something similar.
Then fix your run so critters can't dig into it! Rats are bad, and weasels can get there too, or any other digging animals.
At least your current rat colony is eliminated!
