We have a mean RIR rooster that picks on the hens. He chases them around and pecks out feathers. When they are free ranging its not a big deal because one of our other roosters, a Barred Rock, protects them and keeps him in check. But when they are in their seperate runs he is just a jerk. I was hoping to keep him so that I could hatch some sexlink chicks but now I'm starting to think he should go. There is a woman in town who is interested in him so I'm not sure what to do. Is it worth putting up with a mean rooster to get some sexlinks?

I was told 1 ROOSTER only to control HIS FLOCK .

BUT if you are breeding for hatching chicks , rule of thumb is 1 rooster for every 8 - 10 hens .

HOW many hens / or pullets do you have ?

I have 48 head . I had 4 roosters and the MAIN FLOCK controller really does not want the other roosters messing with HIS HENS . LOL

This is a picture of OUR FLOCK CONTROLLER and he does a great job of protecting them also ...

IF you really think your rooster is uncontrolable , then get rid of him , to many good roosters .

The only way a mean rooster should stay is if he is a rare essential. He's not rare and plenty of good boys out there in his breed. Bad attitudes get the ax around here. There is no reason to keep something like that around. And to pass them on to someone else is putting yourself at risk for liability.
