Nasty Rooster Behavior

So I have a pretty nasty rooster. He attacks pretty much anyone who comes into the coop. In addition to no longer being attacked, I'd like him to be nicer to smaller chickens. My friend just hatched a chick and if it turns out to be a rooster, she doesn't want it, so I'll be taking it. It is a silky bantam and my rooster is a giant, full grown, Rhode island red. Is it possible to get him used to a new addition like this and not hurt him and get him to stop hurting us?

How old is your rooster? When you say he attacks everyone do you mean people, chickens or both? If he attacks people, I wouldn't even try. Make soup or find someone who will take him with full disclosure. A chicken like that can really harm a child and that aggressive behavior shouldn't be continued through breeding.

He is pretty young, just over a year. And he only attacks people. We don't have any children around. I just need to know an effective way to teach dominance.

Yeah we might end up making some soup. I just have a fondness for this particular rooster (even though he's pretty aggressive), and he wins good prizes at fairs, and I wanted to make sure that it was last resort.

Do not worry, you do not have to kill him. Just make SURE he knows you are the cock of the walk. Some people say not to act like a rooster back, but it has worked for me. If he attacks, you attack back. Bat him out of the air with your arm, whack him away from you with your leg, but mostly grab him on the shoulder or back and tear at him like your hand is biting him without actually ripping out feathers, or hit him on the back. Do not try to actually hurt him, but do it as hard as it takes to be convincing. Do not let him tidbit or dance for you.

Nasty roosters taste really good! RIRs, especially production reds, are often not so nice. He shouldn't reproduce, and won't improve. IMO. Mary

At over a year old he's not going to improve much. You'll be able to make him tolerant of you and will never be able to turn your back on him but he'll continue attacking other people. That kind of aggravation is not worth enduring. If your up for it then grab him everyday and walk around with him until he calms down and submits to you. Then continue to pick him up now and then for the rest of his life. So much easier to eat him and find a better cockbird.

If he is already aggressive to smaller birds I definitely would not put a juvenile silkie cockerel in with him. He could easily kill a silkie.

On top of that sounds like he has been human aggressive for a while. I doubt you will be able to cure him of it at this point. Better to try out some chicken recipes on him and find a nicer rooster. Possibly that silkie if it is male.
