Hi
I have perches in my coop that I made from wood - about 2.5 - 3 inches wide. My neighbour has told me I should only use perches that are tree branches as they are round and the chickens can hold on - I didn't think chickens "held" onto a perch like other birds do. I've read a lot of your posts and it seems people do either. I've also read that they like to sit so their feet are covered to keep them warm. Can someone please tell me what I should do? I am in Australia and these are my first chickens - they are both pekin bantams.
Thanks

They don't need branches. It's a matter of preference. You're right, in that they don't grasp like other birds, but rather lean on their keel and feet. Often it's reccomended to have a 2x4 inch perches, with the 4 inch side up. With banties, 3 inches is fine.

We have approx 3" round trees for our perch. The one girl that has funky toes sleeps on top of the nest boxes. I do have 2x4's for the bantams and they love it, good luck!
