I have just recently found out about food grade DE and couldn't find it in the local feed and garden stores -- well, they all said "food grade" didn't exist and that what you use for pools or Sevin would be just fine! Ha! I found this place online: http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/buy_diatomaceous_earth.html (in case you can't find it) and within a few days got probably enough to last me for years. I was pleasantly surprised to see how nicely it helped dry out the dampness in some areas of the bedding that got exposed to rain -- carefully put under the bedding and kind of "stirred-in" in some places, also raked into the dirt the girls dig holes into to make their little dusting areas, and have also put small amounts into the feed. I've also noticed the coop area doesn't smell anymore which is great. Don't think the girls have worms but, like you, I want to work on prevention. I also read in past week or so about the pumpkin seeds which I still have to buy and also somewhere buttermilk was also mentioned -- I happened to have some around and they had a bit of it last week -- they never turn down anything! I'm so happy to know about all the natural choices!
