Bald Red Vent

It was flystrike, the flight maggots ate through the body cavity. Do you have a vehicle starting fluid? Call around to see who can, do you have any neighbors who can?Sorry u meant I can bring her, I can’t twist her neck or out her down myself.

What precautions do I need to take? I’ll need to clean the coop where she slept in case there are any Maggots there. What else should I do aside from clean up all the droppings and clean the bar she slept on. Is there a particular product I should use?

If there are maggots in her droppings is scooping out the bedding and cleaning/ replacing it enough to keep the other girls healthy? I have a wood poop board wrapped in a waterproof (underpayment) barrier covered with hemp bedding.

The only precaution is to get a fly bag trap and to make sure the other birds don't have poopy butts.
It's not contagious.
Sorry about your hen.

Thank you all so much for your help. She just passed away my poor girl. I can’t imagine the pain she must have been in….I feel so utterly devastated. Would a fly bag trap have prevented this?

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost a hen this way a couple years ago, and I’m still not over it. Understand that you can’t prevent something you don’t know about. :hugs
The best protection is to regularly keep an eye on your bird’s bums and quickly wash them if they get poopy. Also washing and covering wounds (check under bandages once a day), and keeping an eye on bare skin and pinfeathers should prevent any more cases.

O. M. G. I took her to clean her up and now saw this!! What is going on? It’s like her insides are in the outside!

Ohhhh noooo! . What caused this why did it happen? I soaked her and the water is full of maggots. How do I out her down, bring her to a vet? I can’t possibly do it myself.

She’s not been overcrowded, she’s fed very well and only pecked on by the other girls when it’s bed time. They all peck each other when finding their place. The coop is kept clean, they have ample sun and shade. I don’t know why this happened.

I'm sorry about your hen.

Flystrike can happen very quickly. Flies lay eggs on soiled feathers or a tiny wound, then maggots emerge. Depending on weather, maggots can hatch out in less than 24hrs. They begin to consume tissue, the can cause infection and a tremendous amount of damage in a very short period of time.

A Fly bag trap can help control flies, but it would not have prevented the Flystrike, there's always going to be some flies around chickens or other livestock.

Monitor hens, check their bums for any poopy feathers, give them a clean up as needed.
