Natural solution to Poison Ivy????

My hubby burned some old dead wood in the middle of winter, outside, that must have had some old dead ivy on it. He was covered from head to toe. Burning is not good.

Never burn,,,,it gets in your eyes and down your lungs. Then the real trouble begins. The man down the hill from us almost died from Poison Ivy smoke getting in his lungs. Use my cure all apple cider vinegar, spray it well, let it die, then remove with gloves and place in a large trash bag. If you have poison ivy, find Jewel Weed. Look it up on line for a photo, use the fresh leaves and rub them on the rash. I make my own Jewel Weed soap for rashes out of season. Take care,,,

Jewel weed soap? Sounds interesting. Just started making soaps...hmmm...

Yes the hot water also works for ants. You know your chickens will find them and you really don't want poison on them.

Even monsanto the producers of roundup will admit it stays in the soil at least a year.

Roundup has it's uses but it really should be avoided as much as possible.

Most of the suggestions on the garden forums and poison ivy websites for killing poison ivy are cut it down, cover up with gloves and long sleeves, and pull what you can. Or get a weed wrench depending what type of poison ivy you have and whether you have future use for it. http://www.weedwrench.com/

If the OP has poison ivy like I do then herbicides might be the only way to go. I have vines as big around as my wrist and going to the tops of the trees. I really don't think that vinegar, boiling water, and goats would work. I'm also talking about acres to treat not just a few hundred or thousand square feet.

Those treatments might work on the smaller plants though.

Goats really would be your best option if owning them is possible. They prefer to eat off of bushes and things that are up off of the ground.

When they eat the plant at the ground and what they can reach up the tree the rest will die off, and Goats can clear acres of land if given the chance.

Years ago we had some poison ivy next to the barn. First I tried to pull it out but it was tough so then I used roundup and I got rid of it. I also have electric wires around my coops and pens and when the weeds start to grow under the wires I take the roundup out and spray under the wires. So far no issues. I have been doing this for years. We also have this stuff called passion flower. It's invasive and it climbs. It was in some of the pens but especially one of the pens and starting to climb the fences and not good. I moved the birds to another coop and pen and used roundup to kill it but it didn't die easy and took a couple of additional applications to finally get rid of it. It was during our rainy season so I left that coop and pen empty for quite a long while before I put any birds back in and never had a problem.
