naturally best for chicken feed

Does anyone know what is actually naturally best for feeding chickens. I remember my Grandma making cornbread and feeding it to the chickens. She was poor and didnt have money to buy chicken feed. She always seemed to have big white hard shelled eggs. Any thoughts on this? I am still on starter feed but wondering where I should go from here...
