We have a mixed flock of 2 copper marans(roo&hen) ,3 leghorn (2roo&1hen) some silkies, isbars (2hens&1roo) ...we've been doing some gardening and I left out a plastic pot one of my transplants came in .the 2 leghorn roosters had started to crow on and off and then one strutted over to the plastic pot and pecked it a few times and tried to mate with it . When he was done he cuddled up next to it .my husband went and kicked the pot to see what the rooster would do and he just crowed and mated it again . Are all roosters this horny? . It's our first year with anything but CornishX so this is all new to us . Also what are some tips for keeping my eyes open for eggs ?what should I look for other then the obvious eggs lol . Our birds are roughly 4 months old so I'm sure we have a bit to wait . Thanks in advance !

We had a lot more leghorns. ..they got taken by a hawk we have been having trouble with .we plan on adding some roosters to the freezer .we just wanted to see who was going to be the nicer of the group ...we also have a few more younger hens but they are still just chick's .
Really? Drakes are that bad lol we have 3 just feathering out now and 5 hens...but you are absolutely right ..to many roosters !
I'm not sure if I should look at this roosters behavior as good since he likes to get it on lol or if I should look at it as a bad thing .that he may be to agressive with the ladies ...if he figures out that hens exist and not just a plastic container.

Welcome to BYC. Roosters may not be as horny as drakes, but they are sex driven especially as cockerels. Have a 'Plan B' in mind because 4 roosters and 4 hens is a problem waiting to happen.
x2 and it's going to happen pretty darn soon. Those pullets are in for some trouble. As well as the subordinate cockerels.

Sorry I should have listed all the birds . We do have more hens they just seem to keep to themselves ...I mostly just listed the ones who stick together but even the entire flock ...we still have to many roosters !! We will be freezing the ones we don't like . We have just let them grow this long so we could see who is nice or not as we had a wicked cornish rooster last year.

What? I'm curious on just how durable those suckers are. This is one thing iv'e not had happen to a plastic pot. :D

Right?!?! ya I was so confused when I had seen him doing that .I had to put it out on here to see if anyone else has had a rooster this ..umm...desperate . But don't worry the pot is OK ..although I think it might go out in the trash tomorrow instead of the reeuse pile for gardening next year
