Today I had what can only be termed a near chick disaster. I went to the barn to check on the chicks and feed Calvin, the lone husky of the apocalypse. I was going to clean out the waterers when I heard a tapping. It seems one of my sex links climbed into the canister where I put the chick grit.
This is one of those continuous animal feeders where you put the feed in the top and it comes out the bottom. When the grit was empty, the chick was small enough to crawl under the opening and get itself trapped in the container.
I took the chick out and inspected it. He or she is okay, but gosh, if I hadn't come along, I would probably have an overheated and dead chick.
I removed the top container so if the chicks feel like climbing in, they pop out free on the other side and not get caught.
I'm replacing that grit container with a mason-jar chick feeder to feed grit.
