So, most of my clutch of eggs from this: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...eatedly-abandoned-eggs.1664259/#post-28622818 hatched all right, but I noticed that three of them were malpositioned. One was backwards, pipped away from the air cell, but hatched just fine without assistance. The other two pipped about a half inch away from the air cell, and got out okay as well. I was really thankful for them because when a chick pips, The blood vessels around it are still functioning and they run the serious risk of puncturing them if they don't pip below the air cell where it is safe.
But this guy wasn't quite so fortunate. I didn't see him pip, but I heard him peeping in the back of the incubator and he had a pip hole covered up with black, which I thought was his feathers sticking through. I quickly and carefully made a safety hole, thinking he had turned inside and was using up the last bits of oxygen. It was not so. Turns out the bit of black was dried blood, most probably from a pipped-through vein.
I'd read that usually in such cases the baby bleeds to death, but I guess it was only a minor vein that managed to stop.
I am so glad. God is watching over my babies. But the loss of blood and the rest of the hatching has me a little worried.
