Nebraska chicken rookie

Hi there,
I just joined the staff of a Nebraska farm school and helped the children build a mobile chicken tractor. I'm a city girl with no chicken experience. We are looking to expand our laying flock, and I'm interested in getting some gentle, calm, child-friendly layers who are sturdy enough for our climate.
