! What breeds do you raise?

Boy it is so cold I just want to hibernate!

My birdies all finally went in the coop last eve and I shut them in there to retain warmth. Even my peas went in. I really worry about my silkies, poor dears.

Lady to answer your question on the peas, usually India blues are good at withstanding cold pretty well. They do require higher percentage of protein than chickens, about like turkeys. When I lived near Lincoln mine just all roosted in the back of our big pole barn. Although poop becomes an issue if you have anything precious in your barn. ;). I do love to watch them but they can get on your vehicles (especially if they are new and you don't want them there!). And come up to your deck and beg for treats (and again poop). They are good for getting rid of grasshoppers and mine kill the snakes so it's all good. I do have a Pyrenees to protect them tho As they are just as prone to predators as any bird.

You have some hardy chooks! Mine probably would be but I have them shut to protect the silkies and showgirls. I lost one little showgirl roo this winter, he was the only one I had that was true showgirl type. He was very prone to getting cold tho and I didn't want passed on so I never bred him. Poor little dear died of cold and was only a year old. Funny most of my silkies are doing fine and I even have 3 hardy souls that roost under the deck and refuse the coop at night.
Mainly the juvie peas are my main worry, just paranoid about them getting too cold. They sit outside the back door and shiver and I get cold just looking at them. I have one that's a real beggar, Annie and sometimes she gets let in for a treat! ;)

I like those big ones, I have some huge old splash and blue orps, but my sister prefers bantams. I love the showgirls tho, they are so cute. Here is the little girl I brought in to clean the poopbslls of her feet, I gave her s bath so haven't put her back out. She is surprisingly hardy tho.
Had her in bathroom, she usually has been roosting on a towel but went in last night and was surprised to see this!
