Hi, I'm outside of Blair. I would love a chicken mentor. I want to observe/help with harvesting some chickens. Anyone want some help?
 
We just hit 116' up here on the nw hill of Lancaster County. Good glory! The girls are melting.... they have ice in their water, frozen peas, and watermelon.... poor things.
 
I am on the edge of Western, NE...the "village" not the vicinity. It is 18 miles North of Fairbury or 35 miles Northwest of Beatrice.

Seriously, what about this heat, eh?! I had to dunk the orpington in cool water yesterday. She sits in the nest box forever and when she came out, she was so hot she was wild eyed and stumbling. Took her an hour and some electrolyte water, but she perked back up. They have a huge barn fan in the coop. They ate 3 pounds of frozen peas last night and today they are out in the meadow, under an umbrella, tearing apart a poor watermelon. LOL.

BTW I MAY have another red easter egger rooster (cockerel) available in the next few weeks. Daddy is an Ameraucana, and mommy is a RIR. ( so he carries the green gene.) They are 12 weeks old. One is definitely a rooster, one I'm just not sure of. LOL. The definite one has a single comb, a rooster tail, and a big red fluffy beard. The maybe one, has a big red fluffy beard, a pea comb, and is showing signs of a rooster tail, but I just am not sure. LOL. The legs on both are no clue. Waiting to see who starts crowing. LOL.

I have a bio secure coop, all have been wormed and precaution treated for cocci. Free range and handled A LOT!
 
Lately has been some awesome weather but it sounds like the heat and humidity returns on Friday. Unfortunately when it gets real hot our flock has learned that the bushes in the ditch on the other side of the county road is the cool spot to be. A couple of weeks ago one of our roosters didn't make it back across :(

Any fellow Eastern Nebraskans have any bantam hens they would like to get rid of? We are looking at adding up to 8 bantam hens to our flock. We currently have 3 roos to 6 hens and the wife and kids will not get rid of any of the roosters. Only two of the roosters act like roosters though :)
