Hi Everybody,
I'm Nate and I live in Beatrice. In about a month I'll be getting a dozen Buckeye chicks from a friend of mine. I am looking forward to having some free range backyard city chickens. Right now I've got a lot of enthusiasm with just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

I'll be learning more in the next month and then a lot more once the chicks show up. I'll take any advice you've got to offer for a newbie.
Thanks! I'll see you around.
Nate

Hi,
We are in Omaha, and the learning never stops.
The website is of immense help.

Hi Nate

To prepare I read a TON...and my best advice is raccoon proof EVERYTHING!!! We live in close to Dundee in Omaha and have the biggest nastiest raccoons. Since I started this chicken adventure 3 years ago I have lost about 4 birds to the hungry bandits in my area.

Good luck on your adventure. I had to bribe my 12 year old away from the fluffy babies at TSC yesterday afternoon. I heard "Mom, come on they are soooo cute" and "Mom, seriously lets get ducks." My husband stood off to the side shaking his head. He loves our girls but does not share our obsession.

What kind of Coop do you have planned? I am starting construction on my new one as soon as the darn rain allows and the baby bunnies in residence in the garden are old enough to chase out. I saved them once from being eaten by the chickens so I suppose I will wait them out.

I wish our chickens would eat the mice.!

Thank you for letting the buns live and grow.
I am retired from rehabbing bunnies this year. Sixteen years of rehabbing
and last year was so busy I could no longer keep up.
And last year the spring started the Middle of March.

DuckhunterNate: If you have dogs, keep an eye out on them.
Had a quite a mess here with our dog getting quite alot of the hens.
It was pretty awful.

Hi all...I am doing some research of breeds I might be able to get locally (Nebraska) or semi-locally.

I would love to expand my mixed flock to include any/all of the following.
Dorking
Swedish Flower
Cream Legbar
Marans

Do any of you know of anyone relatively near by who might be interested in parting with 1-2 chicks/pullets (hens) for a reasonable price. I can order from Greenfire Farms or some such other place but they want anywhere from 35-60 dollars per bird of the varieties I am interested in. I would be interested in helping a breeder who wanted to remove imperfect birds from their breeding flock as I am not intending to breed. I would willing pay a reasonable price, but it is always the shipping that gets you and I hate to run the risk of loosing birds in transit due to the trauma of shipping.

As a city dweller I can not have a roo

so I unfortunately can not re-populate my flock from within or help with breeding efforts of rare and endangered birds.

Thanks all for letting me ask.
