Nebraskans Speak Up!!! NEBRASKA ROCKS!!

Hello Nebraska!

I'm not new to BYC, but I will be new to Nebraska by September or October. We bought a place in Brownville last summer, but I had to teach one more year in Kansas before I could retire and actually move there. Boy, is it a good time to get out of Kansas!

With the hassle of downsizing so we can move, and going back and forth from Wichita to Brownville at least twice a month, I decided to give most of my current flock to two young families from my church, and just start a new flock as soon as I can. I miss my chickens!! I'm trying to figure out how/where to build a coop (without spending a fortune), and I will be looking for birds as soon as I get that done.

We have six acres on the west edge of Brownville, and I know chickens are allowed, but probably not roosters. If anyone in southeast Nebraska will have chicks or young pullets for sale this fall, I hope to be ready to buy some. I'm trying to figure out how/where to build a coop (without spending a fortune), and I will be looking for birds as soon as I get that done.
are you in the state yet?

The movers are scheduled to load our stuff Friday, Oct. 28, but won't be driving on the weekend. I hope they'll get our load to Nebraska by Monday, 10-31. I'm in panic mode at this point. I don't know how we'll get it all done.

Hi Nebraska!

I stop by BYC from time to time but I don't think I have ever greeted everyone in this thread.

I'm from near York.

I have 14 guineas (mostly lavendar, a few pearls), 5 Barnevelder, 8 Buckeye, and 1 Delaware hens, and 2 Buckeye roos.

What brings me to BYC this time is looking for some new Buckeye blood to outcross with my inbred birds, plus my newest obsession... ducks! I dearly want some ducks, but they are so messy... we will see. But its fun to read about everyone else's ducks.

When I have one go broody in the Spring, could I drive our and buy some fertile buckeye eggs from you?

Sure, contact me and I will see what I can do. I will not be able to guarantee they all are from Buckeye hens though, as all of the hens are in the same pen. Some hens lay distinctive eggs that I can sort out, but not all of them.

Ducks are cute, but WAYYYYYY too messy for me!

Ugh, I know it! I was reading some of the duck threads on here. The threads about ducks had me all, "Awww! How fun!" and the threads on coops and ponds had me saying, "Yuck, water, mess, mess, MESS!" So I don't know how that is going to play out yet...

Okie dokie. Will let you know what I decide to do.

My sister is in Ohio, so I might be able to get some buckeyes when she comes this way.

I have French blue black and splash marans. Plus other heritage breeds, but the rooster is a French black copper marans, so I KNOW which of my girls are pure, since they are my only dk dk brown eggs.
