I have 1 Ameraucana rooster, 4 Buffs, 4 Bards, 1 Red and 1 Ameraucana.
My largest Buff has been losing neck feathers and some tail feathers. Now a second is losing her neck feathers too. The spots aren't bald, but noticably thin and there are feathers all over the coop and yard. It doesn't seem to be bug related. But no one else is doing it so I'm thinking it's not molting-especially since it's predominantly in one area of the body. They seem to be acting fine otherwise.
I'm the photos you can see how the feathers are broken down low. Another photo shows the base of the feathers showing on her head.
Thoughts?
Thank you!

It's a partial molt, and they sometimes do it their first winter. When I noticed this, I thought their heads had shrunk.

It was just those three. None of my other pullets did that their first winter.
Exactly! Which is what worried me.

I know this post is a year old, but did you/do you, do anything. We are in an especially cold snap, so it concerns me that her neck is not fluffy and warm. Only one of our 8 has the neck feathers missing. There are pin feathers, it is not bald, and not red.

I have one like that. We are not doing anything. Our temps went very low in our cold snap. She seems to be fine. We did out a brooder lamp in there during this snap which started last Thursday. Temps are getting back to regular cold so we'll remove the lamp tomorrow. Just keep an eye on her.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. This is our first winter with chickens, and we’ve not even seen a molt to know what it looks like, other than pictures of others…so we were a bit alarmed. And worried. It was nice to read others had 9 month olds with a partial molt in winter as well. I just did t expect it till next fall.
