This is our first necropsy. Can’t determine what this is. This on a 4 1/2 yr old buff Orpington chicken. It was located near the liver. (Which seems like an off color to me) all thoughts welcome! Thanks in advance!!!

There was one egg starting to form. But no ovaries or a normal “string” of yolks.
O.k. We'll see what others think, it's always interesting to see. I'm thinking that is the Ovary, it's just turned to a cancerous mass, but could be totally wrong on that.

Oh, I forgot to tag @coach723 and @azygous too. More eyes, better suggestions/thoughts!

A mass of that size must be cancer. There isn't anything of that size naturally occurring inside of a chicken. Are you sure that isn't the liver? An enlarged liver with obvious tumors is an indication of an avian virus, lymphoid leucosis.

I agree with @Wyorp Rock that you need to slice into it and show us what a cross section looks like.

Pictures of it cut open is in the above reply! I think the liver is in the second picture on the original post. But I could be wrong.

I would like to know how the chicken was behaving in the weeks or days prior to death, and if she died naturally or was euthanized. When you finish the necropsy, of course.
