Necrotic /or/ Gangrenous Dermatitis, I think.

I found a dead hen today. She had a green thigh area that smelled awful. I don't have any pictures.

I think she had gangrenous dermatitis.

I don't know if I should treat my whole flock, maybe with an antibiotic. I can't find a definite answer. I don't want to lower my flock's ability to fight it by giving them antibiotic if I don't have to.

I have 2 questions.

1. Can this be spread to humans? I'm good about washing my hands, but don't want to make any of my family sick.

2. Should I throw out my eggs? I don't know which ones were hers, and I don't know if any other of my flock have this.

Here are more details:

She was a Sumatra, I think. She came unlabeled and that's the best I could figure.

She was probably 11 months old.

She seemed healthy, but I haven't spent much time with them over the past few days, she could have been sick and I didn't notice.

We've had a lot of rain, but their food is sheltered. They have fresh water. We have had flooding for weeks and do have a septic, but their coop and run are past our field and they haven't been out to range in a week.

The green was bright, almost torquoise. The smell was a rotten smell.

(she died while roosting, she roosts in a tree in their run. she could have died a day ago, possibly more. but, the rest of her body didn't look as rotten, only her flanks.)

Nobody knows the answers to my questions, but I'll update anyway.

So far, no one else has died or looks sick. I threw out all the eggs. 6.5 dozen. Bummer.

I started giving electrolytes in their water, I don't want to give an antibiotic to lower their good gut bacteria if it's not necessary.
