Need a cheap, DIY and small nesting box.

Mine flipped the small tubs when I tried them. I had a grand total of 1 egg laid in them.
Mine like rabbit nest boxes with the slanted side.
If you google “diy chicken nest boxes” you’ll come up with all kinds of visuals.

An old wooden bread box might serve your purpose, or a drawer from the Restore.

Mine found an old feed bucket that was mounted on the wall in an unused horse stall... they love that! It's like a 1/2 circle shape and has brackets that fit over a 2x4. I finally put it in their stall for them. It's funny what they decide they like. LOL

I am planning on using a plastic tub with hay inside.
Good suggestions and your idea should work.

I have 68 trips around the sun for decades I have been raising chickens
For years I have been lining my plastic milk cartons with a 4" board zip tied to the front with the folded empty nylon mesh feed bags.
When a bag gets soiled pop out the soiled and pop in another. Poop or broken egg just peels off in below freezing temperatures and just flakes off when left out in the sun to bake and dry.

Oh! Remove the excess string from the open end of the bag it can get tangled in your birds legs and wings.

Easy Peasy Japaneasy.
