Well my 10 sex links are going to lay in a few weeks hopefully. My local feed mill sells grower and layer mash for $7 a bag but it's mash. They said they can't make pellets or crumbles beacuse they don't add oil to there feed. Right now there on grower mash and they waste soooo much. Should I move them to layer mash when there ready or should I pay more for a pre bagged pelleted layer, and would I save overal more money? I think that the extra cost would make up for food loss. Also are pellets the same to the hens? And what brand of layer pellets are good?

For quite some time I switched all my large fowl over to Pelleted feed as the birds I had at the time wasted a lot of the crumbles, which the closer you get to the bottom of the bag, end up as powder anyway. My birds I have now do not so much, but I also switched to a feeder that has the dividers and a lip around the edgeso they cannot flip the food all over with their beaks.

Many birds will protest the change in feed if they are used to getting it a certain way so be aware if you switch to pellets, they might not eat for a while. They will adjust, trust me.

If you are happy with the mash, you can do a few things, add Wheat Germ Oil to the feed and mix it up. My birds LOVE IT and it helps it stick together when its all powder. Also you could boil up eggs to them - also will help stick it all together. I do the above ideas with the oil and eggs and I add in various seeds and they love it.
