I hav a flock of 24 pullets , 1 Barred Rock rooster & 1 Ameracauna rooster. All are 9 weeks old. Yesterday, I came home to find my ameracauna rooster dead. :-( It looked like something grabbed him thru the fence. I would like to hatch eggs next spring, so am looking for another rooster about the same age. A must is that he cannot turn aggressive to me. I'm thinking maybe Buff Orpington this time. TSC is having an animal swap in their parking lot here in 2 weeks, so I'm thinking of getting one then if I can find one I like. What breeds of roosters have you had good experiences with?

Well, any rooster of any breed can be mean. And I've had good and bad experiences with many breeds...I'd say it really depends on the bird. A safe bet I think is a Buff Orpington, Cochin, Rock (I've only had experience with the columbian variety VERY nice birds), my Easter Egger roo was the sweetest thing on earth but have heard varying reports on EE's. My Buckeyes are very respectful roosters also. Just to name a few breeds!

I would, however stay away from the very lighter, hyper breeds like Andalusian, game cock, etc. Just my two cents. :)
