Yeah, pretty much. Check out older threads in the Predators and Pests part of the forum to find out what happens to people who are absolutely positive their dogs would never get loose, or are so well trained they would not harm the chickens, or their runs are totally predatorproof so it's ok to leave the pophole open overnight, or they do not have such-and-such otherwise-common predator in their area :>

Good luck,

Pat

I live in the middle of the city I don't have raccoons.

One of my good friends said this last year and she lost almost all of her flock to a raccoon and she refused to believe it was a raccoon killing them because she never saw any, until her hubby caught it in action. I agree with Pat, you may want to move it away from the fence just a bit. Raccoons love all the city garbage laying around.

It sure is a cute roost tho and nice and natural for the chickens. I bet they will love it. Mine have to have the plain ol 2x4 so their poor feet don't freeze off. It's about 10 degrees here today

Right now I wish I were in sunny TX!

The 2X4 keeps the chicks feet warm? I'm not sure I understand the difference. I actually have a natural roost in the coop and a 2X4 & frankly I like the 2X4 better just because it looks like a more substancial thing for them to be set on, but the chickesn? they prefer the natural branch roost and actually crowd to get on it. It's the oddest thing and frankly I'd been just waiting for an opportunity to put another 2X4 in when I realized this & had since changed my thoughts to put in a clothing closet dowel thinking they'd prefer that & it would be the easiest to install. But if the 2X4 keeps their feet from freezing some how then I think I'd go back to the 2X4 idea. I'm just not sure I understand how it can keep their feet from freezing. We haven't hit 10 degrees yet here in NJ but this one of the more colder Nov. I can remember & we are certainly in the 30's at night. I'm afraid to think what Feb. is going to be like.
