need a rooster?

NOW YOU TELL ME!

This is serious... My ten chicks will probably have five hens. With the coop I'm building and all you talk about above and considering the number of eggs those five hens will lay in a year or two of laying life, (this is no joke) I seriously doubt that I will ever get to where one egg costs me less than $2.00.

Edit: And that is IF nothing happens to those five hens.

well, joebryant, to your list you'll need to add medical supplies for the 5 roosters who will fight to the death over your 5 hens.

Whatever crows, goes!
I might keep one, but the others will be given away. If my neighbors complain, I'll get rid of the one.
I hope to end up with six hens; however, ...
Wouldn't it be something if it it turned out that all ten are roosters; it could happen.

You don't need a roo, but if you like the sound of crowing (which I just LOVE) then get one. I like the crowing and I think it gives the hens s a sense of security if they are free range. A good roo will protect his girls and even risk his life for them. I know this because it happened to my roo. He tried to save his girls from a hawk, which by the way he did succesfully, but he lost his life in that battle.
If you are not looking to breed, then a roo is just a personal choice.
