    Hi Board!

My name is Alayne and I breed, show and raise Labrador Retrievers and Beagles in Virginia.

I am very competative and have always had a love for chickens. I have read quite a bit about chickens and have decided that Wyandottes are the breed for me. I am looking for a mentor and show breeder that can help me understand the breed, genetics, showing and all of the wonderful things about the breed.

I would prefer someone within a few hours driving distance but if I have to go by photos and ship my new eggs/chicks then I will.

Please..anyone that can help me with ANY information on the breed, genetics and showing I would greatly appreciate it.

Oh! My first question: What is the standard bird per square foot ratio??

    Thank you,
    Alayne

    Hi Alayne,

I would recomend you contact the Wyandottes of America Club...
Maybe someone in your area is a member and they can get you the contact information...

Oh,, and start thinking about what color of wyandotte you want to mess with...the whites usually do well at the shows, followed by the Silver Laced..

    Hi Jerry,

I went to the site and there isn't any contact information that I can see or a breeders list. [IMG]

I am one of those people that always take the hardes route and so I would like the most difficult colors possible to breed of course. [IMG] Though I really do not know what colors are available or how they are created, if they cross colors and produce others that are show acceptable and all of that. That is why I need a mentor pretty badly.

    Do you have show Wyandottes?

My best and thanks a bunch,
    Alayne

You've chosen a good breed. My wyandottes are a nice friendly bird.....not to mention how pretty they are.

You will have to forgive me, I am using my wifes username for this post...

I show White, Silver Laced, and Blue Large Fowl Wyandottes....I have a few other colors too. My favorite being Blue Laced Red Wyandotts but they are not in the standard..

I would recommend the SLW to work with, they are very beautiful but they are difficult to get just right....I can email you some contact info for breeders if you are interested.

I have Silver Penciled Wyandottes and I know they are very hard to get a hold of -- if you like the hard way. -- [IMG]

The "required" footage is 2 sf per bird. However, the far majority here give lots more room than that. Over crowding tends to make bored birds with vices.
