Need a workaround alternative to a hardware cloth apron

this is a great idea and I might have to adopt it. Im thinking we have ledge most of the area of one side of my new run.

If we line the entire bottom of the run with hardware cloth, then add a few inches of sand or hay, do you think the chickens will dig/scratch down to the cloth? Seems like the other option, instead of burying a hardware cloth apron, is to leave it exposed and then cover with rocks, wood chips, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

Occassonally, but with 6 inches of hay, it's not a problem. And by the way it's nearly 4 months and the hay is still sweet smelling.
