Need Advice - Antibiotic recommendation for large chicken wound

I have a hen that was attacked by a bobcat yesterday, she has a large wound on her neck about 7" x 3". I cleaned it last night per the directions listed in post #6 of this thread:

However those directions suggest using the antibiotic Penicillin G Procaine (Aqueous Pen-G). I have Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim on hand and was wondering if I could use this instead. Please advise as I want to get her on antibiotics asap.

I currently have her penned in my coop so she can see the other girls. She seems active in her little cage and eagerly ate treats when I offered them. Her stool was slightly runny so I put ACV in her water. Any other advice is much appreciated.

Tylan is a wound anti biotic. They gave it to me before surgery and Tyalan 50 is a chicken anti biotic.

Get Gel Vetricyn to spray on the wound.

Chickens are very tough so there is hope!

Unfortunately I have no idea about dosing and it does not look like it is used much my chicken owners, when I did a search on this site.

I have only used Pen G for wounds so I don't have experience with any other med for wounds.

Thanks for the information. I ended up getting Pen-G since that was what I could find at the local feedstore. I will be giving her the injection this evening & cleaning the wound again. I'll post her progress after I do my cleaning.

I am amazed at how tolerant she is of having me work on her. Poor sweet girl! I really hope she can recover quickly from this.

Hello there.
I know it has been awhile since he accident with the bobcat, but did you hen make it??? I have a hen who had the skin taken off of her neck by a dog about a week ago. She doesn't eat much, but has been drinking water with electrolytes. I have tried yoghurt, scrambled (and hard boiled) eggs, strawberries... not sure what to do about her eating.... I have been keeping antiseptic (Blue Kote) on the wound... I was looking on here to find out what antibiotics to try. I read your post and thought I'd see how your situation turned out...

Please, any advice/information would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a 3 month old chick with the same injury. Unbelievably from one of the flock mates pecking at it. Tore the skin right off the back of the neck. Glad i was there to see it. Immediately brought it in and cleaned the wound. Its eating and drinking well. I was thinking antibiotics also, but it is so young and not sure on administering im to a chick that small. Hope everyone's chickens pulled through.

Many times antibiotics are not necessary. If wound is kept clean and moist while it heals then it very well may heal up just fine. I would apply plain neosporin 2 or 3 times a day to cover the wound, keep the chick from getting pecked by others, and that may be all that needs to be done.
