Okay.. when I pulled the chicks out this morning I moved the remaining eggs away from the side. When I did one peeped at me and that is when noticed that one had pipped.

Okay now he has made a hole between a nickel and quarter size hole. We can see his beek and part of his body. He is peeping and trying to get out but he looks to be so wadded up in there he cant move to break any more of the egg. We are watching him closely and seems to be at a stand still on progress..... for about 2 hours now.

When should we help him? Or should we help him? I was thinking to maybe pull some of the egg off but NOT the membrane... do you think that would help? how do I do it with out shrink wrapping him? WHAT SHOULD I DO? I feel so helpless here

i just had kinda of the same thing happened to me just 4 hours ago. I left the egg in there and it hatched but we think it died shortly after. I heard that if you need to nurse a chick most likley it wouldn't survive for long hope this helps

yes that helps thank you but I sure hate for it to die... I know it is just part of life but still.... :(

Give it a few more hours at least. Hatching is one of the hardest things chicks will ever do, and they frequently take breaks. I know this thread started last night, so, any progress?

GIve them a little time ( I say this calmly as I have no eggs hatching now, if I did Id be the one posting lol , something about them hatching makes me drop about 50 IQ points and get a severe case of ADHD) Its hard work though hatching so unless it looks like there is some reason he really wont make it out then he should be just fine. I had one egg for my latch hatch that got all glued up with blood from pipping thru a vien but besides that everyone even if they took awhile make it out fine once they started.

Well we kept watching him and no progress but he was peeping loudly and trying to get out. My husband and I decided we should help him IF he had not made any progress by the time he left for work the next morning. So at 5:30AM (Friday) after he left for work I pumped up the humidity a bit and slid my hands under the lid held the egg in one hand and the tweezers in the other. I carefully peeled off pieces of the egg that were already cracked. I pulled 3 small pieces off and the top of the egg fell off so I laid him back down to finish hatching on his own. What I notices was 1. although the humidity was up (between 70 and 75%) and the heat was perfect, where he had broken the egg (about a quarter sized cirlcle) it was very hard, but once I broke that the membrane inside was very soft. and 2. he was really in there weird, his little wing was up over his head so he could not move his head.

I figured if I helped him he had a small percent chance of survival. I can say with great happiness that he is very very strong and noisey. He barely shuts up (he is all alone since, I moved the others before he hatched yesterday). He has made a ton of laps around the incubator over the eggs over the sponge and the humidiguide... he is almost dry now and stands up on his legs so he is very strong.

I will say it was a very tough call... I dont like to interfear but at the same time I feel we made the right call on this one.
Thannk you all for your input.... and like I said before, if I survive this hatch with my sanity, or what is left of it, it will be a miracle LOL

and 2. he was really in there weird, his little wing was up over his head so he could not move his head.

Congrats on the hatch first and second, they all position like this actually, it's how they grow in the eggs... very strange, but also normal. There are occasions where they stay in this position too long, and their neck muscles don't work right afterward, though.
