BETTA in my experience I'd say yours wasnt a mycoplasma--- Sorry to say it usually doesnt respond well to the medicated feed or standard meds you get from the feed store (perhaps a peck or other minor trauma to the eye during capture/ shipping/ sale???)
Its harder to see on quail than other speces because of their size and feathering, but the eye watering/ swelling is actually a late sign of these illnesses--- the whole maxofacial sinus swells 1st, but its hard to see on these guys unless you know what your looking for--- Fitzy's photos show a very advanced case and the 1st pic if you look you can see the whole side of the birds face is swollen... the eye swelling often comes last
Treatment is usually recommended as baytril (vet only) in combination with either lincomycin or sulfa or all 3--- sulfa you can find easy enough, but linco is usually a mail/ internet order only sort of drug and baytril is dispensed only by your vet, the sad part--- cure is ellusive on this lil guys, thats why I preach dont mix (I have been here and learned the hard way) as prevention is rally the only sure cure. The really bad part--- If you save the animal it will now be a carrier and may infect any other birds it comes in contact with for the full lifespan of the animal. So not only does it cost big bucks to fix, the cure- if sucessful- renders the bird useless for anything other than solitary pet use.
these are not bacterial illnesses! They are mycoplasma illnesses and do not respond to antibiotics--- the antibiotic is merely profylaxsis to prevent secondary infection from bacteria. The mycoplasma illness simply runs its course (like chicken pox in children) In practice the antibiotic prevents another bacterial illness from coming in and infecting the bird and hopefully prevents death from 2ndary infection which is often times the case with these situations.
