Need Advice for Electric Fence "Strength"

We did electric fence when I was a kid for cattle and hogs but I've never done it for chickens. A friend here has a square grid type electric fence for chickens that I helped them install.
My question for both of you is, does your charger keep a steady current on the wire or does it pulse intermittently?
My pulses also. I've heard of deaths occurring with steady current. That's not my intent. I just want to scary it/them away.

I like my critters to be zapped as they try to break into a structure. This makes so they are dealing with two challenges at same time. As they are trying to break in they properly aligned to get zapped. With more zap tolerant critters like bears that may prove important so they find effort unpleasant enough to stop. Beekeepers might have a better handle on joules required to repel bears as well as how strands are arranged.
