Last summer I spontaneously brought home 2 Rhode Island Reds and my husband and I built a coop and loved rasing those 2. At the time, I dove into chickens first and learned along the way. I now have a full binder of info. Last January, a neighbor's dog dug out of her yard and into ours and killed my precious hens (pets really).
After a week, the family decided that the backyard was too empty and we decided to get more. (I will always have chickens now!)
After reading an encyclopedia on chickens and reading about breeds, I thought that buff opringtons would be a good choice for an urban backyard setup. Some reasons were they are one of the most docile breeds, and are not too loud. I got three chicks in February. They have been loved and spoiled and are called "The Three Peas."
They are allowed to free range in the yard during the day, (Chicken Gardens is a great read for this) and go in their coop at night. They started laying this week. I've gotten three eggs in three days! However, one hen, "The Mother Hen," has become aggressive when I walk in the their area of the backyard. She rushes at my feet and pecks them. She actually had me running from her! (She left a mark on my foot as I was wearing flip flops! I now wear rubber garden boots and I am not afraid, but she and I are not fond of each other now. Good thing she was the first one to lay an egg!
Advice?
