I don't paint the inside of mine, the chickens might pick at it (maybe not) I have expanded metal on the floors or dirt and the straw falls out of the nesting/ perching areas and gets clawed into the dirt and then rake out the pens every other month. The perches get messy but when it dries it falls off or I sand it if it gets really bad. I don't think its critical to paint, more personal preference. They don't poo in the nesting box. But they will at night while roosting, use looks of straw in that area and hardware cloth or expanded metal is the best. home depot by the stucco supplies. Its 26 inches but 8 feet I think.
I use asphalt emulsion (black tar )to seal wood surfaces then elastomeric paint ( roof coating) It holds up very well in the sun.
