Here’s the scoop: we just moved cross country and successfully brought our small duck flock with us. They are now being cooped (next to our outdoor dog) in a small outbuilding that was formerly storage. Long story short, both of my dogs have had ticks since we got here (a total of 4 in 3 weeks) and the wait to get to a vet is insanely long here. Anyhow, I’m going to remove everyone from the outbuilding and fog it this weekend. My question, aside from just freaking out, is: do the same ticks that attach to dogs go after ducks? How panicked should I be? I’m now in WA btw - I reckon I should update my info. 😆

I've never seen a tick or fleas on my poultry. My chickens had mites a few times and My waterfowl did not most likely because they swim in their pool a lot. To get rid of mites and other external predators use something that is safe around poultry because they have a very sensitive respiratory system and a strong-smelling fogger may have detrimental effects on them. Also, I would think Ivermectin would work to rid your birds of any external parasite. I used it on my Chickens when they had mites. A few drops under their feathers on their neck [skin] and a drop under each wing and a drop above the vent are. When I sprayed my coops I used neem oil [garden centers] used a pump garden sprayer and mixed the neem oil with very hot water since you want the neem oil and water to mix real well. For your dogs topical flea killer should work I buy the front line generic and never have ticks or fleas on my dogs.

Thank you so much for the reply!

To be clear, I’d remove everyone from the shed to fog first thing in the morning and then let it sit all day into the next day if necessary. We definitely have ticks in our yard, but the great news is that we found a vet who will see both of my dogs next week. Thank God!

Thank you Miss Lydia for the advice. I am getting both dogs on oral meds but would definitely look for something more natural for the ducks since my kids eat their eggs. (I don’t because I’m allergic - go figure!)

I think chickens are much better at eating up bugs. But let’s hope my ducks get a taste for them. I asked my new neighbor, and he said they’ve all had tick issues, people and animas. Great - that would’ve been good information before we bought this house.
