My Black Star started molting a week ago. The other day I noticed her butt was bare and part of it somewhat swollen and very raw. I've posted a picture. I've rinsed her with saline and put mess in her water for worms (but I don't see any in her droppings which are very loose). Any advice? She seems thirsty and she eats pretty normally. She can't stand to be picked up I imagine due to her almost complete loss of feathers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Frankly, it doesn't look any worse than some of my birds. Looks like she has good feather regrowth happening.
I have a buff brahma that low hen in my flock. She has been missing all her butt and back and most of her wing feathers from either being pecked or pulling them out herself. She's been molting and looks like a feather pillow that's loosing its feathers. The good news is she has a ton of pin feathers coming in and I'm hoping she will totally regrow.

She looks like she has a lot of pin feathers coming on. Are you feeding them 18% or higher protein while they molt? If there are raw areas with open skin, put a dab of Blukote on it to disguise it from other pickers.
