I found a nest of 6 eggs in the hay barn. I don't know how old they are. . . .(darn it anyway.) BUT, I know they are not fertilized. No rooster for miles around. If they don't smell when I crack them, can I at least scramble them and feed them back to the chickens? They may be more than a week old since I just discovered this sneaky little spot. What do you think?

Do the float test. Fill a large bowl with water and put the eggs in the bowl. If they sink to the bottom, they are fresh enough to eat. If they float or bob, toss them.

Will that work if I stuck them in the frig? Do they need to be room temperature?
I should have paid more attention to the postings on egg age!!! AGH! No time to read everything on here!

Double thank you, HorseJody - two bobbled a little and I tossed them, but the other four sank like rocks!
I appreciate the help!

My aunt used to just break eggs in a saucer before she used them. If they looked and smelled OK, she cooked them. If they didn't, she poured them down the sink.
