I recently got a brahma hen. Did not notice anything until we turned her outside. She was walking funny. She would lift her right leg high to walk then she would hop if she had to go faster than a slow walk. Yesterday I noticed that her toes were curled and would not extend so that her foot would land flat. Today when I checked her I notice that she had a yellow discharge from her vent. She is eating but is still thin. I have had her about two weeks. I gave her some boiled eggs and have given her veg from the garden. she hasn't been very active, sitting around alot, almost like it is painful to walk. Any suggestion on what is up with her and how I can help her. Hate seeing her like this. Thanks

Is the yellow discharge from the vent foamy? If foamy I am thinking worms. Especially since she is thin.

Does it look like egg yolk? Do you think she broke an egg inside her?

Was she walking like a penguin? If so, could she be eggbound?

OK now for her toes:
Were her toes curled when you got her or is it a change?

If new, it could be curled toe paralysis- riboflavin deficiency.

riboflavin- scroll down

If not new, it could be genetic, from the incubation temperatures, or an old riboflavin deficiency problem (wouldn't hurt to give her some vitamins).

They sell poultry vits at the feed store or online. Some use poly vi sol no iron:

look under correct feed and supplements for this person's dosage on that

I am sorry that I don't know what is wrong with your hen but I hope this helps. I hope she gets better soon!

I guess you would say it was foamy. I was thinking worms also. I am going today and get wormer for everyone. She has always walked raising her leg higher, but I just notice Wed that her toes would curl under and toes would not land flat. I have only had her 3 wks this sat. I am also going to start her on vitamins. Is this also something that would help my new chicks. I got several of them from the same place I got the hen.

Don't forget to worm them again to break the life cycle of the worms. Unless you are using a wormer that is approved for egglaying hens like Rooster Booster you will need to toss eggs- a lot of people on BYC say for two weeks. There are many threads on Valbazen and Safeguard. All those wormers (including Wazine) are not approved for egglaying hens so it is an off-label use. I haven't tried the Rooster Booster yet, myself, but have some on order.

OK if her toes are newly curled it sounds like curled toe paralysis to me and would become permanent unless the riboflavin treats it quickly. Make sure your vitamins contain riboflavin.

I worm 10 days apart, myself.

Vitamins wouldn't hurt any of your poultry IMO. They sell poultry packs of vitamins at feed stores. Personally I wouldn't give the Poly vi sol without iron to any of your chickens except the one with the curled toes, as the dosage may be a lot more than a chicken needs and you don't want to overdose them. So for your other babies I would just buy the poultry vits.
