My wife and I recently purchased a home in Glendale AZ that came with 5 chickens. We were excited and wanted to learn all about raising and keeping backyard chickens. Unfortunately we are experiencing some tough times financially and are unable to keep up with their upkeep. Where can I give them up? I believe one is sickly and we can’t afford to take care of her. Any advice on who or where we can take them so they can be well cared for.
 
Robert, that's going to depend on what sort of home you want them to go to.

It's easy enough to give chickens away for free on craigslist or other classifieds sites. Just make sure you're up front about the condition of the birds, etc. However on websites like those once they're out of your hand they're not in your control anymore. If someone sent me a sick bird for example I would probably put it down and/or eat it and then keep the healthy ones.

There may be some farm animal rescues that could work with you in the area but that requires you researching what's nearby and contacting them. Where I live there's a number of college farms, farm parks and one humane society that all take in unwanted farm animals.

You could try asking on chicken groups on facebook or advertising them for rehoming on here.

Whatever you end up doing, make sure you're up front with the fact that one of the birds is unwell, your expectations for the chickens future home, etc. And recognize that sometimes you don't get to pick what happens to them after they leave you.

Sorry you have to give up your flock.
I would start another thread for the one that is unwell. If she is carrying an illness you wouldn't want to rehome the flock as they would have been exposed and could be carriers.
If she is egg bound or suffering some type of non-contagious ailment, you may be able to help her. If not, she should be culled but the rest of the flock could be responsibly rehomed. You could try Craiglist.

I completely understand about being honest about the condition of the chickens. Thank you for your advice. I care for these ladies but feel inept to care for them. I’ll look into red homing them.

Thank you for your comment. It’s because the one isn’t well that I’m researching. I feel completely unprepared to care for her. So re homing the others is the best coarse for us.

We are all unprepared to care for them the first time they are sick. Don't feel bad about that. If you post about her condition in the ER forum, you may find out treatment is pretty straight forward. It depends on what is wrong with her. If she is contagious, then you could be spreading a disease to someone else's flock, so be sure they know your chickens have been exposed.
