need advise for cabinet incubators

Go to Dickeys web site....he has the electronic thermostat as well....so the comparison of the two units are the same mechanism's.

I would like to see your incubators deerman...if you have time send pic's to me with history of each....good thread

Well one more time, the electric thermostat the dickey is like the old GQF had for the last few years, not the NEW CONTROL CENTER.

I have post pics. of most of my incubators on this forum,will see if I can find the thread.​

Hey Deerman, I have a question for you. I seem to collect incubators also, I have 10 now, anyway I bought an old, old incubator at a flea market for $20. last year, I believe it is a sportsman,(it is red in color though) it has the trays that turn but to turn them it has a crank on top of the incubator, you manually turn the crank and it rotates the trays, have you ever seem one of these? BTW it still works great, I hatched out alot of geese eggs in it last year.

those were make over 35 years ago. GQF Sportsman soild wood stain red, those were before they changed to press board.Has two wafer thermostats. Come to think about it I got mine before 1970,so guess 40 years, still works great, only thing I have changed is the wafers.

Great fine, now you see why I alway brag about sportsman incubator.

I even have all the parts to make it an Auto turner, but I just leave it as is.

Little history About the sportsman, first ones had 2 Wafer thermostat, then a few years back, they had 1 electric thermostat, and 1 wafer thermostat, Now the ones have the control center.

They also made models for Ostrich during that time.
The first ones were made more for Quail eggs, saw those in book in 1964. Thats GQF, Geogia Quail Farm.

Have see were a few made after the patent ran out by a few people, ones were called I think HICKS. Most were made with GQF parts.

These are just thing I remember, guess I may be getting OLD.


Not that I like the way GQF is, heck I hate the fact they have been selling the JUCK Chick-a-Bator all these years also, dont know how start late 60s plus you got 6 quail eggs with them.

Hey, thanks for the information. I figured it was a sportsman. It has three turning trays though, and duel wafers. I though about converting it over to an auto turn but I sorta like the crank, it is different, and it is easy to turn them a few times a day. I have 2 of the new digital control bators and I love them, as well as 3 of the electronic ones. I agree with you, you just can't beat a sportsman!

Isn't it great that we have choices...one person likes a Ford the other a Chevy. It would be terrible if we only had one choice.
On an earlier thread, a person is reporting a 100% Hatch Rate with her Dickey Incubator, with the electronic control center thermostat...that she paid $566 FOB Millen, GA. Which, I believe is less than gqf sporty...each company is making virtually the same unit except for the personal quality that the small manufacture puts into his and COST....when your second.... you try harder...net net they both will hatch eggs. I have said it before, I'm saving my penny's for a Dickey....I like supporting the little guy.

Well the Dickey, does NOT and I repeat does Not use the same thermostat as the new GQF sportsman, but the one like the older GQF model electronic thermostat, reason for the price jump on the newer model GQF.

I myself do not like one anymore than the other.​

Like to add for all those reading my post,on this thread.

If I was going to buy a new incubator of this size.

It would be the dickey with the dual wafer thermostat, no full clear door,and no bucket (HUMIDITY).

It only take a few min. to fill water pan(also this replaces the air)

IS the new electronic, better yes, just like the new read out are better, worth the money????????

The old sportsman I have with the dual wafers still work after all these years.

So if you want to save alot of money, you can do without the 3 bucket,clear door,(they have small windows), and electronic thermostat.

You can get the Dickey without these, not the sportsman.

I have the new sportsman but I did go back and buy the clear door. Which I love, love, love. I have the humidity bucket too which is nice if you want to go away on vacation a couple weeks and not worry about it.
But you don't need those things the other door works fine but I couldn't stand not being able to watch them hatch out. Plus I didn't want to have to have someone come check the water in the pan when I was on vacation. So I went back later and bought the humidity bucket. It's really a set and forget for 3 weeks bator. I don't even candle them I wait until day 18 when I move them down to the hatching tray.

I say this simply because it is made of more appropriate materials, with a vastly better temp control, and designed by the company that supplies many of the world's specialist hatchers.

Take a look at all the suggestions, and make your choice. You will do pretty well with any of them.

There is too much gushing around here about Dickey. I am sure Mr Dickey makes fine incubators, but they are a bit of a cause celebre in BYC right now. Not so long ago it was the Sportsman that was favourite. It has a very good reputation.
