I had just put my "middle babies" (all feathered and about 4 weeks old) in the coop. We have a creek 30 feet away from the coop BUT a huge rainstorm came through dumping 4 inches of rain and flooded the coop with 2/3 inches of water.
Most of the chicks went to higher ground but 3 in the corner drowned. I lost a 1) buckeye, a 2) light brahma and 3) a medium brahma!
The coop is secure... very, very secure, double hardwire cloth and 3 doors..... I did not think flood waters would go in and drown my chicks.
I waded to the coop with cardbard boxes and transported all chicks (55 left) to my barn and they are in a make shift pen with hardwire cloth and shavings.
What to do? do I add dirt to the chicken pen? rocks? I spent 3 hours in the RAIN DIGGING 4 TRENCHES around the entire coop. Most of the water has subsided now...... any suggestions?
