hi!
My family has wanted to expand our clutch of hens this summer. I have had a series of broody hens and we were given a couple of fertilized eggs from a friend (we don't have a rooster) and set to it. They sadly did not hatch. We decided to try again on Aug 1. My friend only had 1 egg because she had a number of her own broody girls... but our 1 egg hatched yesterday morning! hooray!
We have a darling chick and a great mama hen. I had taken a much more low key approach to the chicks due date this time around and I had to put together a place for them pretty quickly. I am not satisfied with what I have so far and would love, LOVE your tips and suggestions on how to make a great brooder coop for my large cochin girl and her one tiny chick. I have a regular sized wooden dog house that has a carved area (no actual door) that I covered with chicken wire but the tiny chick just poked through and then was panicking not getting back to her mom. We have a neighborhood cat that I don't trust to not injure her if she gets out too. So I'll be changing that for smaller gauged hardware cloth... or something. but before I do i want to see if I'm even headed in the right direction with my idea.

Please send your thoughts my way. thank you so much!
