Hi. I have a hen that's been making a strange sounding call. Not like the usual egg song I hear. It's as loud, but it sounds like, "waaah, waaah, waaah"! Almost sounds like a peacock but not as high pitched. There's no bawking in between. Can anyone tell me what it might mean? She's been doing it everyday since her sister went broody, and now there are chicks in the coop she can't get to. Might that have something to do with it? She's always been my loudest hen.

Is the call grating on your ears like an engine that's run out of oil? I had a Wyandotte who liked to just hang around and make loud, annoying and grating noise. I also presently have a couple hens who crow in the mornings.

Why do they do it? Because, like toddlers screaming to hear themselves, so do hens.

Ah, I just didn't know. She's the only one who makes this weird call. She sounds so insistent and yeah, it can be annoying.
