Got 2 of these free. However they don't open. Thinking of removing the wooden frame and mount it to the coop using a piano hinge on the top flange. Any other ideas???

I can easily install these, however there a stationary window and don't open. I want to be able to mount these in a way to get airflow in the summer to cool the coop, so I need some way to install them, but still be able possibility tilt the window out for airflow..

Why not leave them as closed windows and put a vent or openable flap btween (or above or below) them?

Hummm. It's a option. My coop will be in full sun, no shade. I could leave the gables open, HC would be used of course. And make hinged panels that I can open during the warmer months.

Your idea of a hinged top will likely be best. If your coop is large enough, you can make a bypass situation, slide one past or on the the other, or place one on each wall, use both as sliders. Remove the sashes from the frames, use the frames to make a top and bottom track, cover the inner opening with hardware cloth, then simply slide the windows to the side to open.
Or, use one window as a door by adding a set of hinges on the side of the sashes, make the other a slider as described above.

Interesting idea with removing the sashes and using them as a track. Not sure if I'm skilled enough to make it fool proof, but it's a chicken coop after all. Lol

Top hinging them will give you the option of leaving them open, even if it's raining. The more ventilation options the better. I used bimini boat parts(walmart.com) to make my supports, no chance of the wind blowing a stick out this way. I cut 4 different length dowels for each window, so they can be wide open or just a little.

Make the tracks by ripping the frames lengthwise use one rip as a bottom and top track. Tracks will need to be twice as wide as the sash for full open. The side sections can be ripped for making the outer edge of the tracks to keep the windows from falling out. The outer edge need not be continuous along the length to promote drainage

Fabulous idea! I'm going to steal this. This will solve a situation in having with my shutters, which state hinged on top solely for the purpose of keeping the rain at bay.

That's what I would do with those lovely free windows. Of course, I'm not sure I could do much else with my lousy carpentry skills...
