Hey, all,

So I had a hen sitting on a near, she was on it possibly 2 weeks once I realized she was sitting, I don't know how long before that. I noticed 2 days ago she was off the nest and today realized something got her. One egg is broken, there are 8 others intact. I was going to leave them but I just am struggling to do that. I have an incubator so I popped them in and thought i would candle them tomorrow once they have been in the warmer 24 hours. My questions are: how long do I have them in there before we lockdown? I don't know how long she was setting prior to me finding her. I'm just afraid they will hatch with the turner in there and get caught in the turner. Any suggestions or advice? I have other questions but can't think of them right now.

Definitely candle them and find out how old they are through that, but it is totally understandable if they mix up. Because of the temp increases and decreases, your due date may be late or early.

Candle them. Once they are internally pipped you can go to lockdown then.

Thanks for the replies. I've done about 4 hatches and I'm just not ever sure what I'm looking at or how to tell how far along they are when I candle them. Do either of you have a resource I could check out?

You can do a search in the Incubating & Hatching Eggs forum for candling pictures. Seeing what is going on inside an egg is pretty much the same whether it is a guinea or chicken egg. Look specifically for photos of draw down and internal pips.

As R2elk said, see the sticky section at the top of the incubating and Hatching forum as there are two candling guides there. Here are some guide eggs - first is one developed about 10 days, second is about to go into lockdown with no turner, last is after egg draw down where the keet has either already internally pipped or is just about to. Best of luck!

Thank you! I will see if I can get some decent pictures when I candle tonight. I've been able to tell with past hatches if the egg is fertile at day 10, past that...🤷

Here are some pics of the four that made it. To my untrained eye I'm wondering if they have pipped internally, but I need some experts to tell me for sure.
