Need expert advice from you all on coop design

Nice looking framework! Caution: If you get hail, reconsider the poly roof. I am close to finishing my coop and had put up the clear poly (Palruf sold by both HD and Lowes) thinking it would bring in lots of light - which it does. I was told it would hold up well, but after 3 hailstorms this spring, I've had to patch it with white duct tape in several places. Have figured out that since I live in an area that seems to be getting more hailstorms each passing year, that I'm going to have to replace it. I also liked the Palruf, cuz due to the corrugation, it allowed me to create a "passive" ventilation system - works great - covered the studs on top under the corrugation with hardware cloth and screen cloth (to keep the wasps out). Alas, after I finish my run, I'm going to replace it with a more conventional roof or go the metal roof way...Gail

You've tried the feed store / farm store(s) for the fencing? It is typical for hardware stores not to have 1x1 welded wire mesh, but seems WEIRD to me that a farm/feed store would not...

1/2" hardwarecloth doesn't make a coop 'dark', although if left unpainted it can make it hard for you to see *in* just b/c of the visual distraction. Main disadvantage of 1/2" hardwarecloth is simply the cost.

I would sure not use chickenwire myself. All it takes is ONE raccoon, or ONE enterprising dog that got through your yard fencing (gate left open, dug underneath, etc), and you've got a massacre. Some people would be comfortable chancing that, of course. Not me however.

Good luck,

Pat
